The Do's And Don'ts When Buying Children's Earrings

Although there is a LOT of debate, there is no right or wrong time for little ones to get their ears pierced. It all comes down to when it feels right for your family, culture, and traditions.

However, there are some definite do’s and don’ts for buying children's earrings when the time comes for you to make this special purchase. What material should you go for? What shape and size should you buy? What earring back is best?

We’ll answer these questions and more to help you enjoy this special, milestone moment together.

There are three main things you should focus on when buying your baby's (or child’s) earrings:

  1. Material - hypoallergenic is always best

  2. Size - petite and lightweight

  3. Design - screw back stud preferable or solid hoops

When should I change my child's earrings for the first time?

If you have pierced your baby’s ears, before you swap her piercing earrings out for a cuter design, you must ensure that the piercing has completely healed. If the earrings are removed before they are properly healed you could cause injury and easily invite infection into the piercing as well as other complications. You must be completely certain they have healed. Usually, this can be around 3 months, however, every child is different and some children’s ears could take longer to heal. If there is any sign of infection or discomfort in your child, you should consult a doctor straight away.

Only touch your child’s piercing with clean washed hands.

What are the Best Earrings for Babies and Children? What metal is best for sensitive ears?

When buying earrings for children, it’s important to avoid cheap costume jewellery that may contain irritants your child’s sensitive skin might react to. Instead, opt for hypoallergenic options that are gentle on delicate ears.

Hypoallergenic jewellery is designed to minimise the risk of an allergic reaction. Solid gold, titanium, and sterling silver are excellent choices. These materials are perfect for sensitive ears and offer the added benefit of timeless beauty. Both gold and silver earrings are durable, maintain their shine, and have future monetary value, ensuring they can be cherished pieces in their collection as your little one grows.

Avoid wasting your money on cheaper, thinly plated alternatives that will eventually tarnish and cause irritation. High-quality gold and silver earrings will keep their brilliance and remain safe for your child’s ears, giving you peace of mind.

What Size Should You Buy for Children's Earrings?

It is important to choose small and lightweight earrings that won’t overwhelm your child’s smaller face or be too heavy for her little ears.

Our mini 3mm stud earrings are ideal for babies, toddlers and young children (as well as adults). Available in classic solitaire round shape or princess cut square, these tiny studs are perfect for everyday wear in dainty ears or as an option for school. We also have 2mm options which are perfect for babies. Children’s stud earrings will also have a slightly shorter post size (the part that goes through the ear) as children’s lobes are smaller than adults'.

How to Keep Kids' Earrings from Falling Out?

To reduce the chances of losing your child’s precious earrings, choose secure gold or sterling silver studs that don’t need to be constantly taken out at bath or bedtime.

However, young children have a knack for losing earrings and so for extra security look for earrings with secure covered screw-backs. These are specially designed earring backs that screw into place and are completely covered leaving no sharp ends to poke your precious little one behind the ear. Another alternative is flat-back earrings which have a smooth post and a totally flat back that sits flat against the ear. This is a very secure alternative and you can view our range here, such as our sunburst heart earrings or diamond moon earrings.

Can Kids Wear Dangle Earrings?

It’s best to avoid dangle earrings for young children for two reasons. First, the weight of drop earrings can weigh down your child’s earlobes, increasing the risk of irritation and discomfort. Second, they aren’t practical for young children who spend most of their time climbing, clambering, jumping, and exploring.

A dangly earring can get caught on something and fall out, or worse, tear your child’s lobe! It’s not worth the risk of injury! Instead, choose stud earrings that are flat, unobtrusive, and widely accepted by schools.

As your child gets older and this becomes less of a risk, they can wear dangle earrings but we would still advise to wear these for very short periods of time such as special occasions.
